A really challenging math project

Hi guys! I am back again for the final time, you won't be seeing me on the web never again. I would be an anti-blogger for the rest of my life. Nah, just joking! :) Well, I am sure that everyone has met a challenge before, be it in academics or in your life. I am in the same boat with you all, I have just met the most challenging task in my academics so far, of course not in my life!
So what is the task that could be so challenging? Hmm...is it a really HUGE homework? It is just a mathematics project, although I have came across numerous projects, but it was the most challenging one I have ever came across in my whole life! Well, the really CHALLENGING project goes like this... We had to put four heads toghter and think of two methods to measure the diameter of our school crest ACCURATELY. After selecting the better method, we had to perform our calcuations and decorate them CREATIVELY on a board. And what's more, they held a HUGE percentage in our CA1! We had to take it extremely seriously! You may think that the project is very easy, just send someone to abseil down and take a measuring tape with him. However, we were 'banned' from measuring the diameter of the school crest directly or fear a HUGE '0'! To add to our misery, we did not have any measurements to aid us to the answer! We were only given a hint, use Congruency and Similarity in the Secondary @ Mathematics Textbook. Sounds impossible, doesn't it?
But there is nothing to worry! Have you heard the famous proverb 'If there is a will, there is a way.' I am sure that most of you have heard it but I do not know how many of you believe in it. Well, i wish to tell those who don't believe it to learn to do so. After we were briefed on the project, practically the whole class lamented about such a challenging project, and being impossible to complete. But after the intensive brainstormings and discussions, I and my group finally found two methods that could accurately measure the diameter of the school crest, even without sending one of us to abseil down! So as you can see from here, although at first me and my group thought of this challenge an impossible one, but we believed in deriving two accurate methods and we finally did it! Now, I and my group are coming to the end of the project and are meeting tomorrow! After hearing this incident, I hope I have brought home an important moral that is 'If there is a will, there is a way.' As long as you have the will to suceed, nothing is impossible! Well, that is all! I hope you have learned some lessons from some of the blog entries i have posted the last fortnight!

One of the many Harry Potter fans

Sunday, January 25, 2009

Hi all! This time, I am discussing about Harry Potter books. Did you watch the books or movies released in the past years. I think most have, and I'm sure for those who did, all would talk about it vey highly. Well, I have just read the 5th book entilted Haarry Potter and The Order Of The Phoneix this year, for I am one of the many Harry Potter fans. It turned out to be an engaging and fascinating read, I simply could not take my eyes off it and in three days, I read the whole book!
I am sure you are now curious to find out how I have managed this amazing feat. Well, it is simply because of my great interest in Harry Potter books. Although it has a fantasy genre, it is not just about waving a wand and muttering some spells,or some unrealisic world like The Chronics of Narnia (No offence to Narnia fans!). Its tells of the close friendship between three main characters- Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. Harry Potter became a famous wizard after he brought the downfall of Lord Voldermort. On the other hand, Ron is an ordinary wizard belonging to a poor family and Hermione is a muggle which means non-magical witch. However, the trouble begins when Lord Voldermort returns, determined to kill Harry for bringing his downfall. Despite the many tuffles they had with each other, their friendship remains strong. They worked united as one, and eventually, in spite of the numerous odds against them, they defeated Lord Voldermort.
The Harry Potter books also tells of the bravery of Harry, Ron and Hermione. All of them demonstrated courage, unafraid of their own safety, most willing to endanger their lives just to save others. For example, in the last book of the Harry Potter series, Harry had a choice to return to the real world or to choose to die. Returning to the real world meant that he would feel more pain. on the other hand, if he chose to die, he would not feel any pain as he is not longer in contact with the real world. But to prevent more families being torn apart and to give new hope to the fighters, he chose to return to the real world in spite of the great pain that was awaiting him. His willingness to endure great pain just to save others from it and bravery could be clearly seen.
Lastly, the plot of the Harry Potter series was very developed, there were aboslutely no loopholes that kept the readers questioing the plot. There were many twists and turns in the books too, for example, in the 4th book in the series, a dark wizard catcher, Mad-Eye-Moody admitted to be one of the followers of Lord Voldermort and made an attempt to kill Harry. However, at the last moment, Harry was rescued and it was later known that he was merely an imposter! At first, I had thought that Mad-Eye-Moody was an antagonist and Harry really had it. Wasn't it a dramatic twist? You bet it is!
Because of the above reasons, I find that the Harry Potter series is definitely one of the best books and undoubtly a worthwhile read. So what are you waiting for? Visit your nearest library and borrow the Harry Potter series!

My Cca

Hi all! I’m back! This would be my third blog entry, I am going to share about my Cca. You all had to select your Cca last year,so what did you choose? Tennis? Uniformed groups? Or Chess Club? Whatever Cca it is, I am sure you have truly enjoyed your past one year with your Cca members and forged new friendships with others. Well, I’ve joined table tennis, toghter with my classmates- Sheng Wei and Kwan Meng. I am so glad I have made the right choice. Although I must admit I am not a good player, but at least I have found joy and laughter there, making close friendships with the other players. My friendships with Sheng Wei and Kwan Meng have developed to a deeper level and we have learned to understand each other better, undoubtly because of the time we spent with each other and the memories we shared that cannot be achieved between classmates.

We have also developed a close friendship with our seniors despite the age difference and them spending most of the times with players of the same age. When I first joined table tennis, I had difficulties playing well as I had not practised for half a year! However, through our devoted coaches’ trainings and my seniors’ constant encouragement, I have learned to play well. But in my opinion, I do not find that playing well is everything that matters, all that matters is that you have 4 years of fun in your Cca. Playing well is just to demostrate how much you have learned in your years in that particular Cca, and to let your coaches appreciate the hard work that you have put in, also to bring glory to your school. But having fun is totally different, you first must find joy in your Cca before playing well. If you can play well, but you do not enjoy attending the Cca meetings, what is the point of playing well?

Once a week, we would have to go through Physical Training (PT) where we would exercise rigourously or non-rigourously, frog-jumps, running or soccer are some of the exercises. And also through these exercises, we learned to appreciate each other more in team games such as soccer. Nobody is left in the lurch when teams are formed, just because he cannot play well. And during the game, every attempt in shooting or clearance is appreciated even though it does not suceed. We would never blame anyone when a goal is conceeded too. From this blog entry, I hope that you have taken one important lesson back home and not think of it like a merely relating a Cca. You should learnt to appreciate your 4 years in your Cca fully, together with the other members. One year has flew away already, and the rest of the 3 years would pass even faster. I hope you would not learn to appreciate your Cca members only at the end of 4 years. Start to appreciate your Cca peers now!

Chinese New Year decorations

Like the year before, our school held a CNY decoration competition. You could not imagine the fun the whole class shared while decorating the classroom!Everyone had a part to play in the decoration, be it giving fresh ideas or doing the hands-on work.Even our teachers assisted in the decorations! Since this was known as the year of the ox, we purchased a number of decorations with cute little oxes decorated along it. Our front wall was lined with red banners, one reading ‘福败迎门’, for those who do not understand it, it actually means luck ushering into our class. Hmm…so how will luck present itself to our class? Maybe everyone achieving good marks for the year? Or will it be free periods for a whold day? I hope I would not need to wait too long for luck to come, especially the latter!
We also pasted ‘hongbaos’ on the blades of the fans so that when it spins, it would appear that there are ‘hongbaos’ floating in the air! Innovative, isn’t it? Those non-chinese must be wondering what are ‘hongbaos’ for. If you guessed it contains money and is given to people during Chinese New Year, you have struck the bull’s eye! They are known as red packets and it is similar to the green packets exchanged between the muslims during Hari Raya Puasa or the purple packets exchanged between Indians during Deepavali. We hung several fishes on the ceiling,to represent “年年有余”which means having abudant fortune balanced at the end of the year for savings or rainy days.Lastly, we added a “sacred” ox made from red packets too, what’s more, it really resembled an ox!(If you do not believe it, you can refer to the photo below) However, after surveying the ox , we felt that there was still something missing. The ox decoration was simply too plain, it was just on the board with nothing around it! Hence, we pasted red packets around it to make it appear more of a Chinese New Year Decoration and to fill up the empty space. And our Chinese New Year Decorations were complete!
When the winners of the competition was announced, we won the second prize in the cohort! We had won a reward for our hard work! Although not everyone got a share of the prize, but most importantly, we all had learnt that with hard work, you will suceed. And while decorating the classroom, we had developed an even closer relationship with our classmates, learning to work as a team.

A Cruise To Penang

Monday, January 19, 2009

This is going to be my very first blog entry of 5 occurences that have left a huge impact on me. Have you all ever been on a cruise liner before?I doubt many have. Well,I have never been on one before till the December holidays last year. Was it interesting? You bet it was!On the eve on the trip,to be frank,I was not really excited about the cruise. What was the reason?Like most people nowadays,I thought that taking a cruise is pretty boring, stuck up in the cabin all day long, tolerating the rough ride in the seas. However,my experience on this cruise to Penang with my immediate family suggested otherwise!

However,I got elated upon spotting the cruise liner we were going to be on.It was simply fascinating, almost as long as a football field,as high as a 5-storey building, numerous dazzling windows peering out from both sides.I simply stood there, gaping in awe at the magnificent liner. How could I not be fascinated? It was just like the huge ships I visualised after watching Titanic! But my elation turned into fear after the cruise liner beginned to start sailing.Watching the strong waves slapping against the liner,I could not help but feel afraid. What if the ship sank like Titanic? What would happen to us?My fear slowly died down once I realised we were not going to sink. Before dinner, one of the staff showed us around the ship. There was an indoor gym, swimming pool and even a golf course! Most important of all, there were four different kinds of restaurants-Chinese,Malay,Indian and Western! All of them were simply scrumptous,it tasted even better than those posh restaurants in Singapore,it was probably because of the polite staff with warm smile.

A picture of the Cruise liner I was on for three days,it included a swimming pool, indoor gym and even a golf course!I and my family had unlimited fun playing golf and swimming, not to mention sunbathing!Although it doesn't appear cosy on the outside, but the interior is definitely comfortable and cosy!I wish I could go on this cruise again!

During the night,we were all entertained by a loving show entilted Tropical. It featured dancers from Asia, they danced gracefully to the music and performed breath-taking stunts. One even balanced plates on sticks all ten at once.Could you believe it?It was no doubt entertaining! What's more, the ride on a ship was nothing like the one that I imagined to be.It was as smooth as it could be and I felt that I was just sleeping on hard ground, and not on a rough sea.

The next day,we relieved our boredom by playing golf and swimming till dinner.Golf was extrewmely fun-filled,although I could not even hit the golf ball faraway, but I managed it after three tries!

On the third day,we finally arrived in Penang in late morning, our destination.Although I must admit I was excited about visiting Penang, but my heart was full of longing. When can I again meet such friendly staff, such wonderful food, such a entertaining cruise? We spent the rest of our day by window-shopping at a nearby mall.

A picture of the famous ABC ice kacang in New World Park.It was so delicious that I had two servings of that.it had three types of fruits-banana,mango and peach, and an icecream of your choice. And what's more, the ice-kacang simply melted in your mouth, exciting your taste buds, filling you with satisfication!Doesn't it makes your mouth water?

On the fourth day,we signed up for a personal tour aroung Penang, the tour guide was very friendly. He kept us entertained by explaining the attractions in Penang, such as the Penang Hill and the Snake Temple.Did you know that there were once hundreds of live snakes sliding around the temple? The Penang Hill was as interesting too,we had to spend 2 hours walking up the Penang Hill. However, the long hike was definitely worthwhile,we had a picturesque view of Penang and the surrounding hills. We were so high up that there were even thin mist covering the hills aroungd us!After that,we visited the Butterfly Gardern, there were uncountable butterflies of all species flying aroungd us.We even had a rare opportunity to touch and observe the butterflies! Our last stop was the Toy Factory,it featured all of the figurines and plush toys of those characters released by Disney! How could I not be satisfied?

During my memorable trip to Penang, not only was it my most enjoyable days of my life, but it was also a trip that was an eye-opener.It exposed me to the culture of Malaysians and the history of Penang through visiting the attractions.
